Specialized Awol

Post by Samuelriley »

Shall I buy the Specialized Awol now or wait two months for a better spec at the same price? I'm doing the London to Amsterdam via Dover-Calais in September but I can do that on my hybrid I already have? Just wanted to get your experience and views, thank you!

They don't seem to get discounted so I'd wait for the better spec'. Have they announced the 2016 spec' yet?

Ooooo I shall be ordering one of them right now!!! Was hoping the Comp would've been a considerably better spec, but the major things are the Sram gearing and brakes, which I don't think is worth the extra £500!

Not for me. I'm much more impressed with the inclusion of Sram Rival Hydraulic Disc brakes.

2015 models are now discounted - even at the concept stores.

They're also reduced a quite healthy amount!

Discounted bikes this time of year reflect availability - if they are still in shops now they clearly aren't very popular for any number of reasons - not just the awful AWOL but pretty much any quality machine. So beware, the shops want shot, the makers want shot so don't look too enthusiastic in the shop. AWOL sizing is. Weird so make sure you try before you buy.

Or they're discounted because the 2016's are out. Why would you buy the 2015 at the same price as the 2016?

Is the right answer :D

If they weren't selling the discounts would have started earlier.

Not true - it's more complicated than that. They don't discount until the run out for many reasons but primarily to protect brand image much like banning mail order sales. From the outside looking in it all looks simple but the poor retailer often has their hands effectively tied by the manufacturers. We had two AWOL's in our store last August - we still have one a year later and can't shift it even with a big discount. Shops have lost their dealerships for discounting / mail ordering some brands - Trek, Specialised, Brompton, Orange to name but a few.

Well, from the outside looking in, it was pretty obvious that the price was constant across all retailers to "protect brand image" (I understand that) but it's equally obvious that discounts started with many retailers all at the exact same time as the 2016 models were announced - so samuelriley's point is valid. All academic to me, of course, as I already own one.
