Hi
Bit of help please. I was cycling into Arncliffe from Appletrewick side, and over to my left I saw this massive looking hill with a couple if tight looking bends and very steep. Thought, I'll have a crack st that one day, looked pretty tough. Went into the Falcon pub in Arncliffe (the claim is behind the pub) and asked about the road and he said it is "Rakes Road" but can't find any information on it. He said it goes on for about 2 miles over 2 cattle grids.
Anybody know bout this climb? Thanks

Re: cycling in Yorkshire dales
think the road you are talking about goes from Hartlington near Burnsall and comes out on the B6265 between Hebden and Dibbles Bridge. It's a tarmac road.
As a point of local info, Dibbles Bridge was the scene of a terrible coach 40 years ago

Re: cycling in Yorkshire dales
If at the Falcon, in Arnecliffe, and looking north - the hill northwest-ish from there is Pen-E-Gent and the road (according to my map) is Brootes Lane. I have ridden that and it takes you over to Malham Tarn.
Well worth the effort and for a 50 mile testing route =
Arncliffe-Stainforth-Horton in Ribbledale-(B6479)-TR at B6255 (Ribblehead Viaduct http://www.visitcumbria.com/carlset/ribblehead-viaduct/) - Hawes.
In Hawes look out for "Gayle Lane" (due south) to Gayle- Hubberholme-Buckden-Starbotton (B6160)- Kettlewell-Arncliffe.
Note.: The climb out of Gayle is know as "Fleet Moss" http://www.theguardian.com/travel/2012/ ... cle-climbs
But worth it due to the downhill (Wharfedale) that follows to Hubberholme http://www.achurchnearyou.com/hubberhol ... ll-angels/
We started at Horeton in Ribblesdale (cafes) Lunched at Hawes (plenty cafes/shops/pubs). Tea rooms at Buckden & Kettlewell.
O.S map 1-50,000 (Landranger 98) shows all.
Low gears needed.

You'll never know if you don't try it.
Re: cycling in Yorkshire dales
Ta for the replies guys. It's not Fleet Moss as have ridden that, could be Brootes be that wasn't what he said. It's hard to see from the road into Arncliffe and was only when I was walking over the hill in kettlewell and then starting to walk down the hill towards Arncliffe that I could really see it clearly very steep looking and even though I asked landlord at Falcon twice I couldn't really get what he was saying.......he was from darn sarf! Had a signed Surrey cricket bat in the pub......Surrey!!!??
Re: cycling in Yorkshire dales
Apologies, yes having looked at it, yes, I am sure it's Brootes Lane that I mean it looked steep, but averages at about 10%....not sure what it is at it steepest, but it looks ok to ride on a road bike?
Re: cycling in Yorkshire dales
Done it many times on a road bike with a standard chainset. Not easy but doable. Hope for a tail wind
