Rhine - Strasbourg to Basel

Post by Therealsouthstander »

What is the best part of the river to do this route ? Is it worthwhile going down the French side then back up the German side to say Freiburg or even Karlsruhe ?

Thanks

Just return from a tour from Munich to Strasbourg via Basel but didn't use the Rhine path on that last stage, used the Alsace Wine Route from Basel to Strasbourg passing through nice old towns like Colmar and Obernai. Well signposted, quiet and very pleasant.
There's a nice easy exit from Strasbourg via the disused "Canal du Bruche".

Many thanks for the reply

What kind of surface was the Alsace Wine route and was it hilly at all ?

Heading of on Saturday and the forecast is saying it's going to be extremely hot

The Wine Route from just above Cernay (near Mulhouse) to Strasbourg uses mainly agricultural back roads servicing the vineyards. The vines are grown on the lower slopes just up from the Rhine valley floor so consequently the route is mildly undulating and also is often not the shortest distance between two points but you can take the lower level D roads as required. The traffic on these was quite light when we were there last week.
