Dawes Super Galaxy price shock

Post by LondonBikeCommuter »

..... of shock when I noticed that the 2015 Dawes Super Galaxy had an RRP of £2000.

To say I'm dumbfounded would be an understatement.... I've mentioned this before but its worth mentioning again. Going through the spec you find a mass of super cheap components that might very well do the job but apart from giving Dawes a stratospherically stellar profit margin should buyers have the word MUG branded on their foreheads?

Mavic A119 Rims = £15.99
Shimano RD-M771 Deore XT rear mech = £36.99
Shimano ST-4603 = £124.99
Shimano BR-CX50 brakes = £19.99

All of the above prices are retail INC VAT that google has thrown up for an average buyer NOT the EX VAT volume Trade prices that Dawes is paying.

It appears that Dawes is trying to hide behind the Reynolds 853 frame but accepting that a low volume independent frame builder is going to charge a good chunk of hard earned for such a frame a manufacturer of Dawes size is going to charging around the £500 mark.

So again I ask WHERE does the £2,000 Dawes is charging for a 2015 Super Galaxy actually going?

anyone care to explain Dawes corporate suicide logic ?

It's probably one of those no-one-sells-it-at-this-price kind of RRP, so that genuine dealers can quote large discounts.

Spa Cycles, who specialise in selling slightly out-of-date Super Galaxies at large discounts, will currently sell you a Super Galaxy 2012 model for £890.

This years super galaxy is basically last years ultra galaxy. They have reserved the ultra galaxy moniker this year for the titanium model.

That being said, the RRP for Dawes are very high, but you don't generally pay RRP, you can generally get at least 20% off.

I think the high price is a status thing - they dont want the brand to be seen as a cutprice/cheap name? These days there are quite a few up market touring bikes and Dawes wants to be seen among them?

It works with sofas.
£899 now down to 123 including the cost of the tv advert.
What is the real cost/worth of anything ?

Or The Bike Shed, who currently have a huge Dawes Sale going on, will sell you last years Super Galaxy, for a mere £1099.00.

Does it also downgrade a brand to always have their product discounted and often at huge discounts?

It does seem too high and generally I thought there were better brands out there. Even Ridgeback seemed to be better spec than some of the equivalent Dawes Galaxy models. I do not think Dawes is in the same league as they once were. When I got my Dawes Sports Tourer back when I was 9 years old it was a good brand to have, truly the main brand to have for touring and what I now know to be audax or sportive riding too. Now I'd just look elswhere.
