North Germany to Berlin

Post by davidknibb »

I've organise a trip from Travemuende (Luebck) via Warnemuende (Rostock) on German Route D" and then South to Berlin on Route D11.

We've scheduled it for 6 cycling days - around 100-110 kms per day - and I've reserved to stay at Youth Hostels on the way.

Anyone done all or part of this recently - who can comment on the general quality of the route, the surfaces, signing etc ?

Any particular issues to look out for ?

Thanks for any ideas, information etc

Along the coast the roads vary from nasty concrete blocks to new tarmac with everything in between - you will probably find a similar mix all the way to Berlin. The terrain is predominantly 'Norfolk', mostly flat with a bit of a roll but generally no steep or long climbing. After Lubeck its all fairly lightly populated, not a lot of village shops or even villages, so unlike most of Germany you need to make sure you have snacks etc as you can't be guaranteed to pick up during the day. Have fun.

the concrete block roads are old DDR roads, so while you're grimacing try and take your mind off it by knowing you're riding on history.

You might think that but i've come across them all over northern Germany from Schwerin to Cottbus, although those in the east are in poorer condition! It was an answer for building on unstable sand.

Keep off the main road to Rostock - heavy traffic (lots of lorries) and a scary lip from tbe road surface to the dirt on the side.

If you get the chance, the brewery in Wismar is very good for food and of course brewed in the building beer! :D

Thanks

The plan is to be on D2 from Luebeck - stay in the Youth Hostel at Warnemuende - and then go southto catch up with the D11 South of Rostock.

Lokking atthe map it seems to be a bit unclear how this bit is done. The map seems to show D11 as being the ferry from Denmark.

butthere also seems to be a cycle way to the West of Rostock from the YH to the centre of Rostock where it looks as if we can pick up D11

Hope this avoids ther oad you were talking about.

Maybe it would be better to take the train to Rostock HBf from Warnemuende - and pick up the D11 from there.

Anyone got any precise details please ?

Thanks
