North sea Route Holland/Germany

Post by foxyrider »

Is there a better direction to travel in terms of prevailing winds? I'm planning on South to North but would happily switch if its easier heading south! :D
Convention? what's that then?

Cycling South to North is generally considered best to take advantage of the prevailing winds.
Between Ostend and Den Helder the route runs closer to the sea leaving the cyclists most at the mercy of the wind. Once across the Afsluitdijk the wind is unlikely to have a major influence.
On a lighthearted note, some of these crazy Dutch people have a challenge race against the wind on the Oosterscheldekering, part of the The North Sea Cycle Route http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_Head ... mpionships
