Alpkit, Revelate and wildcat are just 3 companies that make frame bags and packs that fit the seat post and frames, mainly designed for off-road touring they are great for light road touring. I use a set of revelate and can pack enough for camping etc, so a few spare clothes etc for CC touring will be fine.

Ortleib also do a smaller one that has a release if you don't need that much space

I have one of these too and they are great for overnighters etc.

Just a word of warning. I would suggest your friend avoids any solution that involves putting a clamp around the seatpost unless he knows the seatpost is strong enough. This is particularly important with carbon posts, but thin walled alloy posts should also be treated with caution. I have had a post snap mid ride, and it really takes the shine off your day.

Can this problem be solved using a non carbon seat post, or is it more to do with the clamp on the carbon frame?

Just get a slightly heavier duty seatpost, like those fitted by Thorn as standard kit on their bikes. You are probably looking for a fairly inexpensive item where the alloy has not been made too thin. The clamp on the frame should be fine as it is.

Works on anything that doesn't have mounting points. :D

It says for bikes with disc brakes...not sure why

Can you get them for bikes without discs?

It was originally designed as a solution for bikes where due to disc brake positioning you couldn't easily fit a rack. It works perfectly on any bike with QR's however and could be adapted for solid axles as well. From experience, if its all set up properly it can't 'migrate' very much and its easily reset if it does.
Convention? what's that then?

I am always impressed at how little space people can manage with. Even CC touring i need 4 panniers, a handlebar bar bag and the trailer to pull the small generator for in between cafe cups of tea. There's nothing like being able to get the Swan whistling kettle out with the toasted sandwich maker, whilst grooming one's beard.
