Kanchanaburi to dawei

Post by Jonnykernow »

I'm cycling from kanchanaburi to dawei in January
Has anyone manage to cycle this section? I understand that it is aprox 100miles on rough roads and no accommodation between the border and dawei, but is there a guest house/ camping at ban phu nam ron, so I can lay up, then get an early start in the morning when the border opens, or will they insist that I take a bus anyway?
Cheers

Try posting here. https://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/ ... -your-bike

Quite a few are going overland to Burma now and someone may be able to help.

I toured there in the days of fly in and out.

Also keep checking crazyguy as new posts appearing all the time.

A number of people have entered Myanmar from Thailand by bicycle via Mae Sot - Myawaddy and found it feasible. https://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/ ... and-travel I recall reading someone's blog about cycling that route, which I thought I got from a link on Lonely Planet, but I can't find it any more. Probs google will find you some travelogues for that route.

Here is a travelogue post, about a year old, of someone trying to ride the Dawei-Thailand route in the reverse direction and failing due to lack of places to stay and people with guns. But they only suffered some minor economic losses and wasted a bit of time before they ended up taking the bus to get out of the country that way.

Thanks guys
I think that I shall have to revert back to my old plan of going in at mae sot. it looks like the distances between official accommodation is too great in the south for cycling at the moment

Mate I have done Mae Sot Myawaddy and the Dawei to Kanchanaburi in the last 6 weeks.

I have a blog on crazyguyonabike . http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/14874

From Khanchanaburi to Thai Border is 70ks then to Burma border crossing is 5ks they will insist you get a bus as it is dirt dust hills for about 150Ks to Dawei 5-6 hours and 3 check points for passports and they all carry guns if you get to Dawei you will then have 300ks of [inappropriate word removed] dirt road to Mawalyime and no accommodation anywhere and they don't like you to camp '

To Mae Sot you will have a lot of huge climbs leave early and once you get to Mywaddy the road over the mountain is one way alternate days and is the worst road in Burma they we traveled on potholes gravel huge drops and narrow with all traffic trying to pass so we got a van with bikes on top hope this helps a bit.

Cheers old china,
It was your blog that first gave me the idea of crossing at ban phu nam ron, then leaving at myawaddy. But I don't think its feasible without using the bus, so I'm going to give mae sot- kawkereik a shot.
I've heard that it's a bit rough and winding but I'll take it slow and safe as pos.
I'm really looking forward to it as it will be my first time in Burma, I just want a week or so to get a flavour of the place for possible future tours, before back tracking to mae sot, then the 105, mae hong son loop and the Laos mountains
I'm going to have a blast whatever, just love S/E Asia
