MUMBAI to GOA

HI! We are 2 cyclists from Germany, and as a part of our Indian Journey staring October we like to cycle from Mumbai to Goa (and then further on down south all the way to Kanyakumari).
Can anybody recommend some cyclable backroads on this part to avoid the mainroad 17?
There are a lot of small roads, but most of them end on a river or a bay. Can we expect a ferry ?
Will we find accomodation in reasonable distances, cause we don't want to carry a tent?
Any more info?
