Dog trailers

Post by mireillepouget »

Seriously thinking of buying a dog trailer so my Meggie isn't left behind when we go on our cycling tours (she is a 14 kg Finnish Lapphund). Has anyone used one for long distance touring?
I am thinking of getting the DoggyRide Original Bicycle Trailer at http://www.innerwolf.co.uk/dog-bike-tra ... ailer.html
so far slightly cheaper than anywhere else but still a hefty £ 209. There are cheaper ones of course on the market but this one looks stable with the tow bar in the centre rather than on the side like most others. There are a few blogs but not many, so any comments from CTC members ? :?: Thanks a lot. Mireille

Thanks, I had seen those. I wabnted to know if anyone in the UK had bought a trailer, gone touring, and which one. Obviously not, at least no one on CTC or this forum! Thanks all the same.

Again no direct experience but...

...Via an early edition of Bicycle Traveller, I had previously come across the Cycling Gypsies, a couple with their two dogs, who have toured extensively - "Along with our two doggy co-pilots we have cycled over 17,000 miles (27,000 km), through 21 countries."

They have a "Biking with Dogs" page with info & links.

I bought this one recently http://www.innerwolf.co.uk/dog-bike-tra ... re=default Only done a short ride so far, but my dog wasn't happy at all. She hardly ever barks or wines, but the whole time she was in it, she was howling and wining and trying to dig out of it. So my advise would be if you can, try it before, or if you get it, you probably need to train the dog to be in it, not just go for the ride like I did:)

There is a lovely article in the June/July 2010 Cycle magazine: Don't forget the dog. Maybe not quite what you were thinking of but I like the idea of the dog helping to pull the bike up steep hills.

Last summer in Glacier National Park I met a couple who were touring with their 15 year old greyhound, Frankie, in a trailer. The lad who was riding a a LHT reckoned his rig weighed over 200 pounds. He must love that dog. It seems the trick is to train them to get out and walk when you're climbing They put quite a bit of effort into that before they set off. I'd show you a picture but I can't figure out how to do it with this iMac.

Not long distance touring but day rides of just over 25 miles with our 13kg Collie. I use a dog bike walking bar for the uphill bits. Shame she has now learnt not to pull but will trot along at 8mph for miles.
She goes in the Jago24 Leper trailer for downhill and at other necessary times. The biggest problem is she soon gets bored in the trailer and wants to run.

I certainly would not want to drag a dog trailer and camping gear up a big hill.
