Bicycle tour in Andaludia, Pico Veleta + other ascents

Post by gyorgyigabor »

Hello !

This summer I cycled 12 days in Andalucia, in Spain. The aim was to cycle up to Europe's highest paved road, to Pico Veleta (3394 m) and cycle up to another roads going above 2000m. I recorded the tour for video and edited the 1st video: a compilation about cycling Pico Veleta, this wonderful climb, from where the sea and Gibraltar could be seen.
I cycled up twice: 1st : starting from the beach of Motril through Granada.... and finishing above the end of pavement at midnight. I did that day wich carrying 25-27 kgs weighted panniers.
2 days later I cycled up from Granada in beautiful weather and lights. It was wonderful!

This great video is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsFzaebbuOw
Enjoy it!
(Beside it, in my channel there are more than 100 videos about cycling above 2000m in the Alps / Pyrenées or in the Canary islands ( Tenerife, La Palma )

In the following month I will write a travelogue about it and edit another videos (about Puerto Ragua (2000 m), Puerto Velefique , Tetica de Bacares (2080 m), Puerto de Escúllar (2036 m) ) and I will inform You about it.

Best regards,
Gabor Györgyi

Hello !
I uploaded 2 videos about 2 paved climbs going 2000 m in Andalucia: I cycled there last year.
The 1st, Puerto de la Ragua (2000 m) can be found in Sierra Nevada, the same mountain range, where Pico Veleta can be found: it isa panoramic road!
The 2nd climb is not too known: Tetica de Bacares (2080 m, with 360 degrees panorama) is situated ca. 80 kms North from Almeria.
There is a saddle not far from the peak: Puerto de Velefique (1860 m): it was visited by Vuelta a'Espagna I think minimum twice. I saw Indurain sign on a rock along the mountain road The ascent to that saddle is very scenic because of the lot of hairpin-bends.

Puerto de la Ragua (2000 m) northern ascent:

Tetica de Bacares from South:

In the video the climb starts at the ca. 14th minute

It doesn't look like any road repairs above the Veleta barrier have been done since I went up twice in 2 days in 2005 - the areas of missing surface could be ridden round then.
Both times I followed the alternative route via the Collado de las Sabinas, passing above Pradollano, and the first time I followed the Guejar Sierra route that the Vuelta are taking tomorrow. That was unladen right to the top, the next day was over to Lanjaron via Capilera with my (hotel) gear.

Hi,

Have you got any maps of your routes in Andulacia? I will be heading that way in early summer fully loaded. So may be interested in checking out or avoiding them as the case may be!
