One year cycling in Africa
Re: One year cycling in Africa
Thanks for that. I did enjoy it. Good luck with your future, wherever that takes you.
Re: One year cycling in Africa
I had a simliar blowout in Jordan but after only 5 weeks. I was working there (not cycling) and because my Arabic was not much good it was difficult to have a real conversation with anyone and I also started getting annoyed at some of the taxi drivers who would try to overcharge me - despite meters being widely used. This culminated in a shouting match with one taxi driver and me jumping out of the vehicle. It was all a bit over the top in retrospect but added to other frustrations such as the general lack of any sort of decision making process amongst the locals the final taxi driver incident made me blow a fuse.
I also worked in Belize for a while and just before I arrived someone had been sent home because they started keeping a live goat in their room...
So I guess my Jordanian loss of sanity was mild in comparison.
But an excellent account of your journey. I don't know Zimbabwe but years ago as it was getting independence I sent someone who was working for me to the country for a short while. He met a local girl and when he returned announced he was going back to settle and marry her - and that was the last we saw of him!

I think with any trip with a large language barrier or culture difference then it is only a matter of time, for some people weeks, for others years.
I'm not surprised your colleague got stuck in Zimbabwe, it was damn hard for me to leave...
