Worst tour experience

Post by matt2matt2002 »

Just back from a 3 day mini tour around Mull Oban Inveraray and Loch Lommond.

Day 1 lost my camera
Day 2 chain broke
Day 3 lost my wallet and credit card.

Oh - and it rained very day.

What bad luck. The next time has got to be better.
It's quite a good idea to photograph your contact details with your camera. You will a least have a chance of getting it back if someone honest finds it. I never keep all my money/credit cards in one place so hopefully I won't be completly stuck if I lose something.
Hope the sun shines for your next trip.

It could have been worse - in another month you would have been eaten to death by the midges as well.

Great tip!! Thanks for sharing :D I have a greater chance of loosing my camera due to me being stupid than it getting stolen, and people are generally honest, so this could be a great solution

Last day in Corsica we went for a walk before catching train back to Bastia.
Lost my companion for an hour or so.
Scuffed and kicked a stick which had a nasty thorn on it, thorn went thru shoe and into my toe.... nasty infected with bits of thorn coming out of it over next several days.... very sore!
Crowded train, our bikes were sort propped in the central aisle and we hemmed in further down the train... At station guard grabbed my bike and attempted to prop in on a vertical post I could see what was happening, could not get off train quick enough to prevent gravity causing top tube to slip along post (it had been recently resprayed).
Then left my camera looped under bungee cord whilst we went into a shop for a few mins prior to boarding ferry..... no camera on exiting shop :!:

These stories are making me feel very insecure. The world is a frightening place outside bed.
I'm therefore going to continue to stay at home and have day rides without a camera or wallet. if my chain breaks I shall phone my wife for a lift home.
Oh, heavens! what happens if I loose my mobile?

Obviously the answer is a stationary bike in the living room, nice and warm and you can watch daytime telly

That's exactly what my wife said to me - after a few other comments I am unable to record here.

My very first long distance trip was the C2C about 15 years ago, we were ill prepared for cold weather as it was the middle of May, hit a blizzard leaving Allenheads and 2 of our group ended up in hospital with hypothermia. We went back and finished the last day a week later.

I wonder if there's a strong statistical association between bicycle-touring and masochism?

I would let you off with the weather and maybe even the broken chain (maintenance is good) but I think Confusious would have something to say about Day 1 and 3. Something along the lines of "Man who falls over same stone twice deserves broken leg". Unless they were stolen, in which case refer to the chinaman.
