Did Whitby to Ravenscar as part of the Moor to Sea cycle route in early July. We had fully loaded bikes with 2inch tyres and a 21 month old in a trailer so took it at a steady pace and very much enjoyed it. We had very dry conditions and so the surface was very passable - in wet conditions I am sure it would have been less easy.

Parts of the rest of the Moor to Sea route (especially around Rosedale Abbey) were not so good! Overall it was a very nice route (we linked bits together to do a big circle starting and ending in Danby) but there were (admittedly short) muddy singletracks through some forested bits that I would avoid on my mountain bike.

Did this not so long ago on a tourer with 32mm tyres , front and rear pannier and camping gear. It's a bit bumpy in places but certainly better than most bridle ways and boats etc. I certainly enjoyed the ride and some of the sea views are magnificent.
Ease or otherwise of using paths like this depends very much on a person's bike handling skills.

We've just moved over to Scarborough - http://thelangsett.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/the-move-part-1.html and http://thelangsett.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/the-move-part-2.html and the path runs right behind our house. I'm hoping to do the section from Scarborough up to Ravenscar on Sunday.

Well, I've had a go on this little beauty...

...and it's still an infuriating mix of incredible views and hopeless surface. The more I ride the route, the more I think it should be surfaced so that anyone can use it. It'd be like a cycling secret weapon: stick the kids on it, and they'd be hooked for life. As it is, I am in a constant state of low level panic when I ride it with my daughter (6) in case she comes a cropper.

And while I'm working on unlikely-to-ever-happen improvements, it'd be nice to be able to ride through the tunnel at Ravenscar too...
