Re: Cadiz

Post by jrclimber »

Just back from this trip (Malaga to Seville) so wanted to say thanks again to all who gave advice.

We approached the coastal section by taking the train from Jimena de la Frontera to Algodonales and riding first to Tarifa. Had intended to use the tracks south of the main road but would have taken a lot longer and weather not great so in the end wnet by main road - not too bad as, like many Spanish roads a decent width of tarmac outwith the vehicle surface. Sadly could only just see Africa through the mist.
From Bolonia (Roman ruins worth a visit), 1.5km off road section worth finding to connect to Zahara.

Approaching Cadiz from the south was, as expected, a challenge. Heading N out of Chiclana there is a gravel track to the West of the road that leads to San Fernando but it isn't easy to find because they are building (though no work going on currently - I suspect another of Spain's stalled infrastructure projects) a new railway between Chiclana and San Fernando. You need to leave the road by Aldi - if you get as far as the roundabout with a boat in it you won't be able to get across the new railway. Once on it this track takes you to the S edge of San Fernando - head N to Bahia Sur station and pick up the track to Cadiz near here. In the end we and bikes got on a train at Bahia Sur to whisk us in to the centre of Cadiz.

Leaving Cadiz via the Rota ferry was a great trip and enjoyed the ride along the via Verde to Sanlucar (stopping off in Chipione) as recommended.
From Sanlucar to Seville the ride on surfaced cycle path through the Algaida pines was lovely, the subsequent road/track along the Guadalquivir less so due to poor surface. We diverted to Lebrija and took the train the rest of the way to Seville.

Getting to Seville airport for an early morning flight was interesting - we were told in the tourist office that it was impossible to cycle there. The city itself has a good network of cycle paths so getting to the outskirts was no problem. Once there there is a service road to the N of the motorway that you can ride on before walking the last 300yds the wrong way up the exit road.
At Seville airport put my bike in CTC bag as usual but was told by baggage handler that it was too big for belt/XR machine and was forced to unpack it, take front wheel off, tape to frame and take saddle off, then repackage (just had enough tape!) - first time that's ever happened.

Thanks again for advice and can provide further tips re other bits of route if anyone interested.

Re: Cadiz to puerto do santa maria

Just to say there are really good tracks to do a circular ride from Cadiz to Puerto de santa maria -and beyond to Jerez and sevilla
There is a very good cycle path beside the main dual carriage way from Cadiz beside the railway that takes you to San Fernando.
The path then follows along beside the railway all the way to Perto Real
go left towards Puerto do Santa Maria and the whole area opens up to cyclists with loads of really good cycle paths
I went to Peuero do Santa Maria and got the wee ferry back, but you can travel on to Rota but you have to go around the American naval base there.
there is a path right round it
