UPDATE

7 days on from the first announcement about the Touring Cyclist Club and response, interest and feedback has been huge.

We have today created a new section on the website "Updates" that does just that - with more about the background and initial plan, together with all the comments received to date. Just go to http://www.touringcyclistclub.org.uk and click UPDATES in the top line menu.

If you've not been to the site yet - please do, and use the "I'm interested" and/or "MY ideas" forms to have your say - we also have a discussion Forum.

Before he comes back at you .... the captcha we are using is an industry-standard tool that has a simple mental arithmetic calculation to enter - the question is displayed very clearly, and has the opportunity to refresh for a new question with a different display. Several hundred responses, so far, have had no issue with the process.

Is there an option to have the computer speak the captcha question? I couldn't see it.

I once worked with someone who was pretty severely visually handicapped and needed to enlarge the text on his screen so that it was huge. I don't think he would have been able to deal with your captcha. The question may be simple but if it's indecipherable you can't answer it. Your captcha is better than a lot of them out there, but it's not great.

I don't know if Joomla has an equivalent, but the Wordpress Contact Form 7 has a very simple approach of asking a random question from a list you select (eg where is Buckingham Palace?). The question can be spoken by a screen reader, or the user can enlarge the text so that it is really huge, show it white on black or whatever they need to do.

The component we are using is without doubt the best "form" that we could find, both for implementation and simplicity of response - there are some alternative options for other captchas in the component that we're looking at on the parallel development site ... like everything with the TCC site and the project it's work in progress and subject to refinement.

In other words, the people who can pass it have no problem with it? What's that meant to explain?

What I am seeing is an eyetest. It refers to using a small icon to the right to get another eyetest if it's hard to read. There is no icon to the right. There's a small circle on the left, but clicking it does nothing. See screen capture below.

That is not "an industry-standard tool". The industry standards body, the W3C, explains why not to use that sort of thing at http://www.w3.org/TR/turingtest/ - it's also useless against human or human-assisted spammers.

So please would TCC be fair to the minority who can see well enough to drive or cycle but not to pass that sort of eyetest? We already have enough national cycling organisations with diversity problems and I'd love TCC to be better.

My hearing is also imperfect and, anyway, some estimate that even supposedly able-bodied people fail audio "captchas" 40% of the time... but that's moot because there is no "speak the numbers" option on TCC.

Takes 2 minutes to implement on any site. Would be worth it to stop people moaning...

Good idea . A comment about page layout and maybe just a personal foible. When you have 2 or more pages of threads how do you move on?
Some forums have obscure buttons or just page 1,2,3 etc with a last button.
Bloody horrid. It badly needs a "next" button at the bottom and ideally at the top as well. This should be for each page of thread titles and also for each page within a thread.

Currently it is very hard(impossible) to judge the forum at least as there are no sections. I know that ideas are being sought but its so much easier to comment if there is something to comment on. This forum is quite good on the whole.

Might I suggest a separate section for arguments. In this administrators could put political discussions and those with strong opinions that never conclude. The helmet issue is the obvious one of course.

Bits of the Bikeradar site work eg workshop, what to buy etc. but it never seems to be an issue here so maybe you need he numbers of hits to make that worthwhile.
At the other end of the scale the STW forum is hugely popular and has 2 sections, bike and chat plus sales and wants.
Go for it although I suspect the uptake will be slow unless you offer a lot. I doubt that the forum itself will put this one into obscurity.

We have tested at the Google Recaptcha and have it running on the parallel development site - what we want to be sure of is the access that Google has to the content and the potential exploitation (some would say abuse) of possible data capture ...... when we are satisfied with that issue then we'll implement it live.

Does anyone have a view ...... ?
