Re: Dangerous batteries!
I had a very early impromptu demononstration of the speed with which NiCads can discharge if shorted, when they first began to be readily available in standard sizes. I had some in an Ever Ready front lamp - the model before the Nightrider, the one that looked like a fairly traditional front lamp, but using 2 D cells rather than the battery that used to be sold specifically for front lamps. The contacts were notorious for their utter dodginess and mine shorted the cells. The top of the lamp was just a mess of molten plastic.

I remember a demonstration at primary school by the fire service relating what happened to a lady with shopping bag containing battery and old style wire scouring pad - very impressive.

Most amusing. The same mistake is made online, and not just in relation to these batteries... http://www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&xhr=t&q= ... 94378411e6

Wot? Someone's easily pleased with AAA batteries I'd like to think I could'nt be replaced mechanically by any less than 4 C-cells

Given the location of the injury - I think most people would prefer the AAA's.

I'm safe back light on pannier rack and kept cool by water spray off wheels.

Re: Dangerous batteries!
As an engineering apprentice i had it pointed out to me very early on the danger asociated with wearing a metal bracelet when working near a car battery. Some poor soul had his bracelet shorted and only managed to retrieve his hand after said bracelet melted.
