I wonder if powder coating sticks ok to aluminium rims?

Yes it does and it wears surprisingly well with rim brakes!

Blimey Mike, those bikes look stunning! Not sure I should be let near anything with a paintbrush, but I'm really tempted. Ivory panels would look nice behind the name badge. And thanks for the polishing/plasticote hints - seeing yours I now know that I do want it to be shiny 8)

I had Barbarella powder coated in bright red.

I was expecting to strip the old paint off myself, but it was a hell of a job, so I looked in Yellow Pages for a sand-blaster to do the job, then I'd re-spray the frame myself. The chap suggested he powder coat it for me.

£30 the whole job.

yes they do. i really love the attantion to detail. can you imagine someone hacksawing slivers off a tube, and brazing them back on inside out like they seem to have done below. then the filing down to make the shape right. i guess that part of the task was a way of torturing the apprentice, but anyhow, it must have added hours to the build time. well done artisan framebuilders of the past. it's aesthetic touches like this that mean no amount of carbon and titanium will ever compete for me

nice work on the restoration too mike

While looking for a new freewheel in Halfords I espied one of their roadsters marketed under the Real banner. It would make quite a good TCT bike and a decent roadster with many of the old parts - 3-speed SA, fully enclosed chaincase, prop stand, a generous saddle - with better brakes and aluminium rims.
Not as fetching or cheap as a small ads special but decent value for £275 for riders not up to an immediate stripdown. One thing to beware of is the sizing doesn't match lightweight conventions. The 20 1/2" model looked about right for my usual 22 1/2" body.

Here's all those BSOs being turned from pipes to bikes. No wonder they can be sold for 75p a kilo

Looks great Mike 8) It looks very retro, yet modern at the same time if you know what I mean. Actually, my idea of modern, not modern modern. Retro modern. Ya know what I mean! Well, my shrink does, and that's all that matters

I'd love to have a closer look at them handlebars when you get a minute.

I dunno, steel frames, no dangly gear bits, metal mudguards, caliper brakes... it's almost heavenly 8)

Actually Graham. There's noting modern about it except for the saddle (by Giant) and the chromoplastic mudguards . It's all pretty much period, but mostly new.

Frame is by Raleigh built 1971

My god, it looked good before, but in close up it's just downright gorgeous

Errm, just asking, but can people please stop setting the bleedin' bar so soddin' high for TCT bikes
