Vacuum cleaners: the greatest advance in public health since it was realised that you shouldn't drink the water you excrete into.

They sucked all the bugs out of carpets, clothes etc. and contributed largely to the eradication of fleas.

No, but whilst I like them as a motorist I wonder if they contribute to habitual overspeed...
