swallows are back
Swallows are back in Lancashire, at least I saw one today, that will most probably be a male single males usually arrive first.
Re: swallows are back
We saw one on Sunday. Just a fleeting glimpse, but no other. Nice!
Butterflies are out in force, I was riding alongside a peacock the other day just at front wheel height and have seen blues and browns too.

Re: swallows are back
Mrs.C noticed the house martins over the gardn on Saturday and on Sunday we were graced by dozens of swallows whilst riding the St.Davids peninsula area.
Lovely!

Re: swallows are back
I saw a couple last week but wasn't sure at the time as it was a very quick glimpse.
Anyway saw a quite a few this morning but are they early?
Great ride out today with actual warm weather and a good dose of sun.

You'll never know if you don't try it.
Re: swallows are back
Got a "tick list" of 65 at Rutland Water last weekend....one of the best days birding for a long time and of course good cycling!
Swallows and Sand Martins were there.
..not heard a Cuckoo though yet.
Also a pair of hedgehogs in the garden

No swallows seen yet, I think I saw a house martin, just the one.......
But we have Lapwings displaying, Curlews calling, Skylarks singing, and at home the local blackbirds keep raiding the currants, I think they are feeding youngsters already. Its a few days since I saw siskin or brambling in the garden, so they might have flown north.
hedgerows full of blackthorn, celandine, wood anemone, coltsfoot, and stitchwort, with bluebells on their way.
.....but on Sunday, we were treated to hares doing that thing where they run round in circles, jumping over each other, etc....no actual "boxing" but magic, all the same!

Re: swallows are back
Well, the bluebells are out in force in the Chilterns. The weekend would be a great time to visit. Out on the downs the skylarks are singing and the hares are dashing about. But...the Red Kites are circling in packs no doubt seeking out the baby leverets crouching amid the green wheat. The Kites have young to feed. They get more and more numerous and more and more widespread every year.

...and aren't hares wonderful? I love seeing hares too (this one is clearly resting and checking out the the angles on your seat post )
I took this pic at Havergate Island a few years ago. It is (or was, because I think the flooding has caused a few problems this winter but hoping they will be OK) an amazing place to see hares. You need to book a short boat trip to get there and I have been several times and its super!
It is on the Suffolk coast and I would also recommend Minsmere RSPB reserve right next door, especially at this time of year for anyone who is interested in birds. Bittern, of course is the attraction - although overwintering in many more places now. I suspect all Hirundines are around now. .....dont worry I wont bore you all with my birding pics
Having said that, cycling and birding are my great passions and I love the combination - so I am often seen with a telescope poking out of my panniers (no that isn't a euphemism!)!

Re: swallows are back
Saw first Swallows in this country last Thursday (10th) at local cycle café, Saw first Bluebells on Saturday when parked up for a race at Rainford. Today there are vast numbers coming out along the route I use parallel to the A6 up to Scorton avoiding Garstang. Oh and Saw first End2Enders out on the A6 today... so I guess spring has arrived.
