From the level 2 course manual
http://www.dft.gov.uk/bikeability/deliv ... e-manuals/
Module 12: Turn left into a major road
"In advance of the junction the cyclist must observe behind and, if necessary, signal left. They should then take up the appropriate position to prevent vehicles from behind moving up alongside at the junction."
and
Module 13: Turn right from a minor to a major road
"As they approach the junction, but still well in advance of it, the cyclist must check behind for a gap in following traffic that will enable them to pull out. If they can, they should then pull out smoothly into an appropriate position where they cannot be overtaken by following vehicles."
