attaching a light to a Blackburn EX2

Post by David Robinson »

Hi
I have a Blackburn EX2. There is no provision to attach a light to the top bar at the back of the frame(not the sides).
Are there any accessories of this purpose Thanks David

Yep - a door stop!!

Cut out a slot for the rails, slide over and attach light. Bored rubber bongs from a wine makers will also do the job, but tend to slant.

These racks used to come with a small aluminiun strap that fitted over, but it was too weak for the job

2 zip ties do the job for me.

To fit the widely-available seatpin type lamp fitting, you just need a dummy seatpin - anything round like a bit of broom handle will do. I use a couple of inches of spare alloy tube (eg seatpin or h/bar) with two slots in the opposite sides of the tube which are a close fit for the rod of the rack. When that is fitted to the rack, the lamp fitting can by used to hold the tube in place. (I've posted a pic of this several times on here, I've not got a copy stored, and a search should bring up a couple of threads with loads of other suggestions.)

This has been discussed before .... see the home brewed gadget here http://www.beewee.org.uk/index.php?opti ... Itemid=109

I've made about 7 or 8 of these now - some on my bikes, others for friends.

Second Robgul. I copied his idea (I'm completely shameless, if it works don't knock it!).

Just to add to that - if the rack has a "platform" in the centre of the "deck" you can either fit the clamp to the offside stay of the rack (obviously doesn't work if you have panniers) OR cut a slot in the platform plate immediately behind the rear rail (drill a few holes of appropriate size for the clamp and file them to form a slot) and fit the clamp as the photograph (which is on my No 1 Tourer - a 1975 Galaxy)

..... I may be looking at a manufacturing opportunity here ...... :?:

What light(s) have you got?

I had no problem fitting lights (SMART) to my Blackurn EX2 rack. Use old inner tube or rubber to pack out the rack tubing to fill the mounting clamp. SMART provide various thickness rubber for this purpose anyway and 2 sizes of clamp. I have one light on each vertical stay either side and one on the top rear bar so three in total on the back of the rack and a further rear light on the seat post as well. So 20 LEDS in total.

Have the welds holding the back stays broken on your Blackburn rack yet? They will. I would really like another rack as the welding on the them is pants.
